Accomodation in Innerleithen for Mountain Bikers

Innerleithen is widely recognised as one of the best mountain biking destinations in the world. Not just in Scotland or the UK - globally. Singletrack voted it the best UK riding destination of 2024.

Nestled in the Tweed Valley in the Scottish Borders, this small town has built a huge reputation among riders. On any given weekend, the streets are filled with bikes, muddy tyres, and riders ready to take on some of the most challenging and rewarding trails anywhere.

If you're planning a trip, finding the right accommodation in Innerleithen is key - because once you arrive, you’ll want to stay longer than you expected.

Why Innerleithen is a World-Class Riding Destination

The Tweed Valley offers the perfect conditions for mountain biking: steep forested hills, technical terrain, and a climate that keeps trails interesting year-round. Over time, local riders and organisations have shaped a trail network that feels authentic, challenging, and constantly evolving.

Unlike purpose-built resorts, Innerleithen’s trails have grown organically, giving them a raw and natural feel that experienced riders love.

The Famous Downhill Trails

Innerleithen is known for its downhill and Enduro riding. The trails here regularly host national and international races, including the Enduro World Series. Watching the world's best riders — Loic Bruni, Greg Minnaar, Rachel Atherton in her prime — throwing themselves down the hill at speeds that defy belief creates a kind of collective inspiration. Locals ride with a confidence and technical precision that's clearly been shaped by being close to elite competition.

Race weekend turns the town into a festival. The high street fills up, the pubs overflow, and the hillside becomes a cathedral of noise as spectators gather at the big features. If you haven't experienced an Innerleithen race weekend, add it to the list immediately.

Top downhill trials include:

  • The Matador – Fast, technical, and relentless

  • Borderline – A demanding World Cup track known for its intensity

  • Innerleithen DH – A classic route with natural features throughout

Top enduro trails include:

  • Flat White – long, flowing with so many berms

  • Waterworld – Now re opened after the timber felling

  • Repeat Offender - Often linked with 3G, this is a long, demanding trail with steep sections and roots

  • Mega Track – a new, challenging, and highly regarded trail which is steep and packed with berms. Totalling about 2740 feet in length. It is the Golfie's new favourite trail With uplift services available at weekends provided by Adrenalin Uplift, you can maximise your time on the trails without the long climbs.

The Town and the Scene

Innerleithen itself is a proper little trail town. With a bustling high street full of shops and cafes. Plenty of places to grab some quality food including The Traquair Arms & Durty Brewing Taproom. Both have served more post-ride pints than anyone could count. There are good cafés, bike-friendly accommodation, and several excellent local bike shops where the staff ride everything they sell and the trail advice is well worth listening to.

The community here is welcoming but quietly passionate. Strike up a conversation about trails and you'll be talking for an hour. Everyone has an opinion on the best line through the rock gardens, the ideal tyre for the current conditions, or which section of the hill is currently riding best.

Practical Stuff

Getting there: Innerleithen is about an hour south of Edinburgh on the A72. It's a straightforward drive and well worth it from anywhere in central Scotland or northern England.

Best time to visit: The trails ride year-round, but late spring through early autumn gives you the best conditions. Summer can be surprisingly dry; autumn brings colour and soft ground. Winter is very much for the committed, but the trails are still very busy.

Bike hire: Several local operators have a range of capable bikes for hire if you don't want to travel with your own.

Trails map: The DMBinS and Traquair trail maps are available online and in local bike shops. Get one. Study it.

Why It Matters

There are shinier bike parks out there. Places with gondolas and smoothly sculpted flow trails and après-ride spas. Innerleithen is not that, and that's precisely the point. It's a place where the terrain is real, the weather is honest, and the riding demands something of you.

People come back here year after year — from across the UK, from Europe, from further afield — because there are very few places on earth where the combination of trail quality, natural character, and community spirit is this good. It gets under your skin.

If you ride bikes and you haven't been to Innerleithen, you're missing something. Go. Get muddy. Send it.

The Tweed Valley trails are maintained by Tweed Valley Trails Association and funded in part by trail donations. Also, the volunteer members of Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue, the local mountain rescue team drop everything to help those in need. If you run, walk or ride the Innerleithen mountain bike trails, please consider contributing by popping some spare change in collection boxes in local shops.
